Career
After graduating from the Madras Film Institute, Suhasini assisted cameraman Ashok Kumar before switching to acting and hitting it big in her first film. Mahendran directed her first film, Lenjathai Killathe (1980), which won her the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress. She starred with Sarath Babu, Mohan, and Pratap Pothan. The film was a challenging love story about trust.
S.P. Muthuraman’s second significant Tamil film, Kudumbam Oru Kudumbam (1981), addressed money and working women in 1980s Indian middle class culture. She played Parvathy, who must work because her husband’s irregular income doesn’t cover the family. Suhasini went beyond Tamil films. All of her subsequent South Indian cinema ventures were successful. Koodevide? (1983), her first Malayalam film, thrilled audiences. She played Alice, a school teacher who fosters an unruly boy, but her boyfriend becomes jealous, causing more problems. Mammootty portrayed the boyfriend and Rahman the naughty boy. The movie received critical acclaim and state awards.
She starred opposite Vishnuvardhan in Rajendra Singh Babu’s 1984 Kannada hit Bandhana. As a doctor wife with a bad marriage, Suhasini falls for Harish (Vishnuvardhan), a hospitalized teacher. Suhasini became a Kannada sensation when Bandhana lasted for almost 25 weeks in theaters. She was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in that year for her performance in the Kannada film. A successful relationship between Suhasini and Vishnuvardhan led to numerous hit Kannada films.
Despite her many successes, K. Bhalachander’s Sindhu Bhairavi (1985) is her most renowned. Her character, Sindhu, falls for Sivakumar’s married musician, J.K. Balaganpathy, causing family strife. Her portrayal earned Suhasini the National Film Award for Best Actress.
She appeared in two successful Telugu films, Chantabbai and Sirivennela, in 1986. The Jandhyala-directed comedy Chantabbai, starring Chiranjeevi as a detective who falls for Jwala (Suhasini), was well received. In K. Vishwanath’s romance drama Sirivennela, Suhasini plays a silent painter who falls for Sarvadaman Banerjee’s blind flutist. Both films became Telugu cinema classics and made Suhasini famous.
She was also praised for her 1987 film Manathil Uruthi Vendum, alongside K. Balachander. She plays a nurse who overcomes personal challenges. In 1988, she starred in Suprabatha, another Kannada box office hit with Vishnuvardhan. Later, she played a soldier’s wife in Muttina Hara (1990). She became a Kannada film star after working with Vishnuvardhan. She got multiple Filmfare awards for Kannada acting.
She had a successful 90s film career. She collaborated with Vishnuvardhan again in Himpatha (1995). Her character was the woman Arvind (Vishnuvardhan) fell for. Like their earlier films, this one did well commercially. It was directed by her frequent collaborator, Rajendra Singh Babu. Suhasini played Veena, who is happily engaged to Hemanth (Sharath Babu) in Amrutha Varshini (1997), but Hemanth’s buddy Abhishek (Ramesh Aravind) disrupts their relationship. Suhasini received the Filmfare Award for Best Kannada Actress.
She was lauded for Vanaprastham (1999) with Mohanlal. Suhasini played an upper-caste woman who falls for a Kathakali dancer in Shaji N. Karun’s film. It earned awards in international film festivals. Another critically acclaimed Malayalam film, Theerathadanam (2001), directed by G.R. Kannan and written by M.T. Vasudevan Nair, followed. After 35 years, she played a student who met her guru. The role won her the Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actress.
With her portrayal as an exorcist in Thiagrajan’s Shock (2004), starring Prasanth and Meena, Suhasini achieved a breakthrough. The blockbuster horror film Bhoot (2003) inspired the remake. In Maathad Mathadu Mallige (2007), she played a loving wife to her former co-star Vishnuvardhan in Kannada. In the film, a farmer fights land acquisition alone. Its positive reviews and box office earnings were impressive. The 2009 Kannada film Makante Achan, starring Suhasini as a doting mother, was a commercial success.
The Rana Daggubati film Leader (2010) casts Suhasini as a mother who helps her son navigate politics. A success, the Telugu film received largely positive reviews. Gabbar Singh (2012) was another successful Telugu film starring Suhasini. A cop played by Pawan Kalyan confronts a severe reaction from an emerging politician’s goons. The film starred Suhasini as Pawan’s mother. In 2013, she played Jr. NTR’s mother in Baadshah, another blockbuster.
Besides playing a mother in Preethiyalli Sahaja, she played a robust chief minister in Viraat in 2016. Ratnaja directed the former film, which starred Surya, while H. Vasu directed the latter, which starred Darshan. She appeared in Nagshekhar’s 2017 Maasthi Gudi.
