Career
Rise of Facebook
Harvard student Divya Narendra had considered building a social network for emotionally stiff Harvard students ten months before Zuckerberg’s FaceMash incident. Narendra advised using the Harvard email address as the principal username to avoid ‘aliens’ joining the network.
To speed up the site, Mark Zuckerberg programmed and wrote source code.
Zuckerberg decided to cooperate with Narendra and the Winklevoss twins during a private meeting, but he doubted their potential. He had a great social network concept while working on the Harvard Connection.
Mark Zuckerberg registered Facebook.com on February 4, 2004. It only worked at Harvard.
After seeing that Facebook had 4,000 users, Zuckerberg and Saverin decided to hire fresh programmers. Facebook was extended to students at Columbia, Stanford, and Yale by Mark’s next-door neighbor, Darren Moskowitz.
Initially, this strategy worked well. A decent crowd watched the project. Signing up required a full profile and a real profile photo in addition to the edu email address.
Facebook became popular outside of school. Zuckerberg was on the lookout for investors. PayPal founder Peter Thiel, famous in Silicon Valley, gave Mark his first investments. Peter Thiel gave Facebook $500,000 for immediate use. The project advanced quickly. Over 1 million people joined the social network in its first year.
The year 2005 marked the beginning of Facebook’s availability to all US colleges and universities. Although Facebook’s user interest skyrocketed over the years, Zuckerberg remained convinced that the platform was primarily designed for students. Registration became available to everyone thereafter. After a while, a Facebook outbreak began.
Users were initially drawn to Facebook because they could chat with real-life friends online. Here is something fresh.
Although Facebook viewership grew, project monetization was questionable. Facebook kept gaining users. Zuckerberg was approached by huge firms to sell the project after 50 million users. Yahoo! once made an offer to acquire Facebook for $900 million. The sum was amazing, but Mark wasn’t satisfied.
Purchase of Instagram, Oculus Rift, and WhatsApp
Zuckerberg is an excellent strategist and keeps purchasing firms that operate independently under Facebook.
Zuckerberg paid $1 billion for Instagram in cash and equity in April 2012. Originally, Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom developed an iOS app. Instagram now works on Android.
Oculus Rift was purchased by Facebook for $2 billion in March 2014. Palmer Freeman Luckey served as the founder and CEO of Oculus VR. Financial incentives totaling $300 million were offered by Facebook in addition to 23.1 million shares and $400 million in cash.
Zuckerberg bought WhatsApp for $22 billion in October 2014. Facebook paid $4.59 billion in cash and 177,760,669 shares. Jan Koum and Brian Acton founded WhatsApp in 2009.
Mark Zuckerberg: TIME’s 2010 Person of the Year
The 26-year-old billionaire Mark Zuckerberg was awarded TIME’s Person of the Year in January 2010.
Julian Assange, Lady Gaga, and James Cameron competed for this title that year. However, TIME chose his role model. ‘The social network developed by Mark connected practically every tenth person on the planet,’ said TIME editor-in-chief Richard Stengel. ‘Today, Facebook is the third-largest country in the world that knows about its inhabitants as much as no government on earth does.’
Forbes named Mark Zuckerberg the youngest $4 billion millionaire in 2010.
Zuckerberg ranked 7th on Forbes’ 2015 400 wealthiest Americans list with $40.3 billion. In November of 2023, his net worth was estimated to be $106.3 billion.
Facebook Is Meta
Mark Zuckerberg renamed Facebook Meta in October 2021, signaling its expansion beyond social media. The metaverse is being built by Meta, which is a virtual world filled with opportunities for work, happiness, and connection. The Greek term “Meta” means “beyond.” The company wants users to interact with digital information and each other in innovative and immersive ways.
Some critics accused Zuckerberg of using the rebranding to deflect from the company’s troubles. Zuckerberg said the move is required to reflect the company’s shift toward next-generation computers.
Zuckerberg clearly believes in the metaverse, but the rebranding’s effectiveness is uncertain. Meta leads the creation of this new planet, he says.

Controversy
Suits against Facebook
The Facebook project was launched amid controversy. Six days after creating the site, Cameron, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra accused Mark Zuckerberg of stealing their concept. The company claimed it hired Zuckerberg in 2003 to create HarvardConnection.com. Zuckerberg utilized the original source code to construct Facebook, according to their testimonies.
Narendra and the Winklevoss twins built ConnectU the same year. They kept criticizing Harvard and the Harvard Crimson, attacking Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg initially advised the media not to disclose the inquiry, showing them what he performed for HarvardConnection and explaining that it was unrelated to Facebook. However, Harvard student John Thomson illegally claimed that Zuckerberg stole one of his Facebook ideas in private meetings. Newspapers published the article, which outraged Mark Zuckerberg.
Zuckerberg revenged Harvard Crimson. He used Facebook to break the mailboxes of two Harvard Crimson journalists in 2004. He looked for newspaper users and looked at their Facebook password error records. Two newspaper employees accidentally logged into Facebook with mailbox passwords, meeting Zuckerberg’s expectations. Zuckerberg was lucky to read the editorial office-HarvardConnection correspondence regarding him, according to Silicon Alley Insider.
The Winklevoss twins and Narendra sued Mark Zuckerberg, but the court rejected their claim. They persisted and sued again. The court examined the code sources again to see if they were stolen. However, the reality was still not clear. Exam results were not released. As part of the court settlement in 2009, Zuckerberg paid ConnectU $45 million ($20 million in cash and the rest in Facebook shares). Case closed. Social media giant Facebook has 150 million users, while ConnectU has 100,000.
The Winklevoss twins petitioned the U.S. Court of Appeals for a retrial but were denied. According to their lawyer, Jerome Falk, the appeals court refused to examine the case based purely on the settlement agreement, which specifies that trial members cannot rejoin the trial after signing it. The counsel believed the action was improper because Mark Zuckerberg lied about the company’s valuation in 2008.
Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss sued Mark Zuckerberg again in the U.S. Supreme Court on May 17, 2011. This was the brothers’ latest attempt to get the case reheard.
