Education
Growing up, Bill Gates was competitive, curious, and a deep thinker. His parents sent him to Lakeside School, a private prep school. At Lakeside, Gates excelled in math, science, English literature, and drama. History served as an inspiration for young Bill. The 1969 Apollo 11 lunar mission required massive computers and billions of dollars of research. At that time, it was very cool to have a computer. Lakeside made an arrangement with Seattle and received Bill’ first computer.
Bill met Paul Allen, a computer enthusiast, after spending hours in the high school computer room. In 1973, Bill graduated from Lakeside and was accepted to Harvard. While at Harvard, Gates considered a career in law because he admired politics, but his actual passion was spending all day and night with the computer.

Career
Starting Microsoft
Gates and Allen left Harvard in his junior year to build software for the developing personal computer market in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after this project’s success. Allen established Micro-Soft in 1975 by combining “micro” from “microcomputers” and “soft” from “software.” After dropping the hyphen. The company moved east of Seattle to Bellevue, Washington, in 1979.
Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft.
Microsoft’s operating systems and business relationships made it renowned. Gates and Allen licensed MS-DOS to IBM, the world’s largest computer builder, for its first microcomputer, the IBM PC, in 1980. They took the prudent decision to license the operating system to other corporations, which made them wealthy.
Finding Success
After Allen departed Microsoft for health reasons in 1983, the company had offices in Britain and Japan, and 30% of the world’s computers ran its software.
Gates’ cooperation with Apple on collaborative projects began years before. Gates came to the conclusion that Apple’s mouse-driven graphical interface, which displayed text and images on the screen, appealed to the typical user more than MS-DOS.
He ran ads stating that Microsoft was building an operating system with an Apple-like GUI. It was called “Windows,” and it worked with all MS-DOS software. It was a bluff—Microsoft had no such product in development—but it was smart as a marketing tactic: It would entice MS-DOS users to wait for new Windows software releases instead of switching to Apple’s Macintosh.
Gates and Microsoft launched Windows nearly two years after his announcement in November 1985. In 1989, Microsoft Office integrated Word and Excel into one system.
Risks of Success
Gates defended Microsoft against litigation and FTC and DOJ probes of improper computer manufacturer transactions. But the innovations kept coming. The first Xbox was released in 2001, and Windows 95 was released in 1995. Microsoft appeared unbeatable.
Gates resigned as Microsoft CEO in 2000, and Harvard friend and longtime executive Steve Ballmer took over. Gates became the principal software architect. Gates left his “daily” work at Microsoft in 2008 but remained board chairman until 2014, when he resigned but retained a board seat and became a technology adviser.
Marital Status
Gates married MBA and computer science graduate Melinda French on Jan. 1, 1994, while she worked at Microsoft. They live in Medina, Washington’s 66,000-square-foot Xanadu 2.0 estate overlooking Lake Washington, with their three children, Jennifer, Rory, and Phoebe.

Early Life
Bill was born in Seattle, Washington, on Oct. 28, 1955, to attorney William H. Gates Sr. and businesswoman and bank executive Mary Maxwell, who served on the University of Washington Board of Regents from 1975 to 1993. He has two sisters.
Gates and his childhood buddy Paul Allen automated their high school’s payroll system and invented Traf-O-Data, a traffic-counting system they sold to local governments. Gates built his first software program at age 13. Allen and Gates intended to start their company right away, but Gates’ parents wanted him to finish high school and go to college to become a lawyer.
As a curious adolescent, he became interested in computers at school and wrote his first program. After he finished school, he went to the well-known Harvard College, but he didn’t stay there long enough to finish his degree. He left school to work on computers with former classmate Paul Allen and found Microsoft. Gates became a global entrepreneur with the company’s success. One of the world’s wealthiest people, Bill, founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with his ex-wife. He has also authored or co-authored multiple books.
As a sophomore at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts, Gates joined Allen, a Honeywell programmer near Boston, to build software for the first microcomputers, subsequently dubbed PCs, in 1975. First, they adapted BASIC, a popular large-computer programming language.
